Spain advises me not to purchase travel tickets until I find out whether the visa is approved. “Two to four months” for application processing (in spite of Spain’s law which demands less than ninety days). Makes obvious sense not to spend money for a ticket you might not be able to use on a date you can’t predict.

But one of the visa application requirements is proof of insurance—and the first insurance company I called says they can’t give me any information until they know date of departure, trip cost, and even date of return.
